Long Beach-Despite a late-inning power surge, the UC Riverside Softball Team fell to Long Beach State, 4-3, in eight innings in the series finale Sunday.
Tayler Misfeldt and Long Beach's Cristina Clermont held each other's lineup scoreless over the first five innings of the game. To leadoff the top of the sixth inning, senior Courtnie Ploesch broke the scoreless tie with a solo homerun to left field while facing a 1-2 count. The 1-0 lead would remian until the bottom of the seventh when the home team got a game tying run on a wild pitch with a runner on third to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of eighth, Chelsey Holley leadoff with a homer to left, her second of the series. After two strikeouts, Stephanie Tickemyer stepped to dish and deposited a 1-0 offering over the wall in left to makeit a 3-1 UCR lead.
The 49ers got the bottom of the eighth started with a walk that was followed up with a pair singles that loaded the bases and caused Misfeldt to be replaced. Anessa Cepeda entered the game and allowed a run scoring single that made it a 3-2 game. With the bases again loaded, the Beach got the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly on a ball hit into foul territory along the left field line.
Darian Tautalafua then came to plate with runners on second and third and walked for the fifth time in the game to keep the forceout available. The following hitter LT Torres then singled to left to drive in the winning run and clinch the series with the 4-3 victory. Misfeldt received the loss, as she was responsible for the three runners on base that scored.
The UC Riverside Softball concludes the regular season with a trip up the coast to Cal Poly in a three game set starting with double header on Friday, May 13.Â
