Detroit Tigers Select Austin Sodders in 7th Round of MLB First Year Player Draft

Secaucus, NJ—The Detroit Tigers selected UC Riverside pitcher Austin Sodders, in the seventh round of Major League Baseball's 2016 First-Year Player Draft Friday afternoon. The left-hander was the ninth pick of the round and the 205th pick overall in the Draft, making him the highest draft pick for the Highlanders since the San Diego Padres took Matt Andriese in the third round of the 2011 MLB Draft.

Sodders was named to the Big West All-Conference Second Team this season, going 7-4 on the year and posting an ERA of 2.57—the seventh lowest earned run average among Big West pitchers during the regular season. His 7.70 strikeouts per nine innings were the 11th most in the conference. The Highlanders' Friday night starter was even better in league play where he went 5-1 with a 2.22 ERA, while allowing just eight extra base hits. Opposing teams hit just .235 against him this season, including .244 in Big West play.
The Riverside, California native was drafted in the 17th round by the Pittsburg Pirates in the 2015 MLB Draft out of Riverside City College, but elected to play for the Highlanders during his junior campaign.
