Sherman's 18 Kills And 10 Digs Not Enough As Volleyball Falls 3-1 To Saint Mary's

Moraga, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team got 18 kills from freshman Mickayla Sherman, but fell 3-1 to the host Gaels in the opening match of the Saint Mary's tournament. (25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 16-25)

The first set of the match was tied at eight a piece when Saint Mary's (3-1) won five points in a row to take a 13-8 lead. The Highlanders (2-2) battled back into the set to tie it at 16, before winning seven of 10 points to overtake the lead, 23-19. The Gaels won four of the next five points, but were unable to keep the Highlanders from taking the first set 25-23.

Sherman had six kills in the opening frame and fellow freshman Leanne Newell added four in the first frame, while Chelsea Doyle assisted on all 11 of UCR's first set kills.

The second set was played just as close as the first. The Highlanders led 20-16 late in the second, but the home team then five won of six points to tie the second at 21. The teams split the next four points tying the match at 23. The home team then got a kill followed by a service ace to take the second set 25-23 and even the match.

Late in the third set, the Gaels established their largest lead of the match at 21-14. Newell had a kill assisted by Doyle that close the margin to six, but Saint Mary's won four straight points to claim the third 25-15 go up two set to one.

Midway through fourth set the Gaels were leading 20-9, when Cristina Maietta, who saw her first game action of the season after overcoming an injury, had a kill and forced an attack error to make 20-11. Saint Mary's then took four of six points to get to game point at 24-13. Sherman had a kill, Morgan Kilne had an ace and forced an attack error to force a fourth game point, which the Gaels would convert to take the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.

Sherman led the Highlanders with 18 kills and 10 digs. Maddie Hubbell logged 12 digs and Doyle finished with 26 assists in the loss.

UC Riverside returns to action Saturday morning against the Nevada Wolfpack at 10 am, before closing out the tournament with a match-up with Middle Tennessee at 6 pm.
