Riverside—UC Riverside's 22,000-plus students are back on campus for the fall quarter, which also means that Big West play is underway for three of UC Riverside's fall athletics programs—Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer and Women's Volleyball.
The Highlanders are members of the Big West Conference, which features nine universities as primary members—Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. Sacramento State is an associate member of the Big West in Men's Soccer.
Big West teams have won Division I National Championships in Women's Volleyball (5), Baseball (4), Softball (1) and Men's Soccer (1), while the Highlanders have five national championships to their credit from their Division II days—three in Women's Volleyball and two in Baseball. UC Riverside made the transition to Division I and the Big West Conference beginning with the 2001-02 season.
The Highlanders Men's Soccer Team made the conference tournament in three of the last five seasons, winning its first South Division Championship in 2014. This season, UC Riverside is 4-4-1, with a 2-0 win over #20 Gonzaga to its credit.
This week, the Highlanders host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, September 29 and Cal Poly on Saturday October 1. Both matches kick off at 7 pm PT.
