Women's Golf Heads To The Entertainment Capital of the World For The Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown

Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Women's Golf Team travels to UNLV next week for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The three-day event, hosted at Boulder Creek Golf Club, begins Sunday, October 22, and runs through Tuesday, October 24.

LAST TIME OUT
Last week, the Highlanders finished fourth at the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational led by a pair of 14th finishes by Jakeishya Le (75-73-76=224) and Hana Furhichi (77-71-76=224) (story).

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS ...
Three of the top five single-round scoring marks in UC Riverside history have come at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. In 2014, Savannah Vilaubi set the program record with a 67 in the first round of the showdown. Hannah Facchini did her one shot better last season, recording a program-best 66. Jakeishya Le was two shots back of Facchini a year ago, notching a career-best-tying 68.
AND A FRESHMAN WILL LEAD THEM
Serena Chon became the first UC Riverside freshman to lead the Highlanders at a tournament since Jakeishya Le did it at the NCAA Regionals on May 5-7, 2016. Le did it on three other occasions during the 2015-16 campaign.
QUICK OUT OF THE GATES
Serena Chon's 71 in the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on September 25 is the lowest score ever shot by a UC Riverside freshman on her first day of collegiate competition. Chon's scoring average of 76.0 is just off the Highlanders' freshman record of 75.76 set by Jakeishya Le in 2015-16.
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
Jakeisjya Le is just a junior, but through October 18, 2017, she already ranks first in the Highlanders' career record books in scoring average (74.59), and number of rounds of par or better (19); second in finish percentage (79.9%); and fifth in birdies (176) and eagles (2).
Her 2016-17 was one for the record books as she recorded the lowest single-season scoring average (73.59) in Highlanders history, besting the previous benchmark by nearly a full stroke. Le's 11 rounds of par or better last year also set the program mark, as did her 34 rounds played, and her 95 birdies. She became just the third UC Riverside golfer in the history of the program to have all of her scores count towards the team totals, joining Jennifer Bermingham (2008-09) and Amelia Ek (2010-11, 2011-12).
Le also dropped in two eagles a year ago, which is one off the single-season mark held by Hannah Facchini (2014-15) and Bermingham (2006-07).
FEELING RANK
Jakeishya Le finished the 2016-17 season ranked 97th in the nation, which is the best-ever ranking for a member of the Highlanders Savannah Vilaubi ('15) held the previous high-water mark, ranking 101st at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season. Jennifer Bermingham ('09) has the third, fourth and fifth spots on that list, finishing her sophomore, junior and senior seasons ranked 109th, 142nd and 177th respectively.
REP'ING THE REGION
In 2017, for the second time in the program's 16-year history, the Highlanders had an individual advance to the NCAA Regionals via an at-large bid. Then sophomore Jakeishya Le was one of six individuals to participate in the Lubbock Regional last season, where she posted scores of 77-78-73=228 over the three-day event (story).
Savannah Vilaubi ('15), who became the first member of the Highlanders to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals back in 2015, posted identical scores of 77-78-73=228 at the St. George Regional (story).
The Highlanders earned their first team trip to the NCAA Regionals in 2015-16 following their Big West Conference Championship victory (). UC Riverside came in 16th place at Regionals, while Jakeishya Le came in 15th in the chase for the individual Regional title (story).
CHAMPIONSHIP RUNS
The UC Riverside Women's Golf Team won its first Big West Championship in 2015-16 erasing a three-shot deficit on the final day of the tournament to win by four (story). They nearly duplicated that effort last season, coming back from down 19 strokes on the final day of competition to finish one stroke shy of Cal Poly (story).
PUT IT BACK ON THE MENU
Jakeisha Le shot a career-best tying 68 on the final day of the 2017 Big West Championship to come within one stroke of tying for the individual title.
STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER
The Big West Conference Championship heads to Irvine, California and the Strawberry Farms Golf Course this season from Sunday, April 15 through Tuesday, April 17.
