Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Baseball Team remains on the road for a pair of midweek games at UNLV, before returning to the Inland Empire for the Highlanders' four-game, home-opening series against Holy Cross.
First pitch Tuesday, February 28 at UNLV is scheduled for 6:05 pm PT, and the Wednesday, March 1 game begins at 2:05 pm. The Voice of the Highlanders, David Gascon, will bring the call of both games to the world wide web via stretch internet and gohighlanders.com.
The Holy Cross series runs from Saturday, March 4 through Tuesday, March 7. First pitch Saturday and Sunday are at 1 pm, and Monday and Tuesday's games are at 6 pm.
The Highlanders improved to 4-2 on the season over the weekend, taking two of three from Fresno State. They nearly made it a clean sweep of the Bullogs Sunday, but Yeager Taylor's game-tying, three-run homerun in the top of the ninth turned into a two-RBI single after it was ruled that Taylor passed Cabe Peters on the base paths (

recap).
Right-hander Johnny Breidenthal (0-0, 0.00) will get his first collegiate start for UC Riverside on Tuesday. The junior has three relief appearances on his résumé so far this season, allowing two hits in 3.2 innings of work. Righty Ricky Delgado (0-0, 5.06) makes his third start of the year on Wednesday.
The Highlanders pitching staff boasts a 2.76 ERA on the year with 55 strikeouts in 62.0 innings. It is early yet, but if that ERA should hold, it would be the team's lowest in program history. The 1977 National Championship Team currently holds the top spot with a 3.10 ERA.
UC Riverside's offense is averaging 4.2 runs per game, and is led by senior outfielder Mark Contreras. The 2016 All-Big West Conference honoree is hitting .417 with a .533 on base percentage, and a .542 slugging percentage. Taylor has a slash line of .333/.385/.583, and freshman Connor Cannon leads the team with eight RBIs.
UNLV is 3-4 on the season after dropping two of three to the seventh-ranked team in the nation, Cal State Fullerton. The Rebels also lost an 8-3 decision vs. Big West foe UC Davis earlier in the year.
With one of the best hitter's ballparks in the nation, it is no surprise that UNLV is batting .325/.404/.440 as a team. Five Rebels regulars are hitting .357 or better, including Justin Jones who has a slash line of .357/.419/.714 and a club-leading three home runs on the season.
The Rebels' pitching has also been impressive, with an ERA of 3.86. UNLV has allowed just 53 hits over 63.0 innings while striking out 53.
The Highlanders are 19-11 all-time against the Rebels, but have dropped three straight games, including both meetings last year at The Plex.
