Fagalde Allows Two Hits in Seven Innings As Baseball Takes Series From K-State With 11-2 Victory

Manhattan, KS—Alex Fagalde allowed just two hits over seven innings as the UC Riverside Baseball Team took the three-game series from K-State with an 11-2 victory Sunday afternoon.
The win improved the Highlanders record to 10-5 on the year, which is the program's best 15-game start to a season since 2009 when they won 12 of their first 15 games.
Fagalde gave up his first hit of the day to the first batter he faced—a lead-off-triple off the bat of Cameron Thompson. Thompson scored on an RBI ground out to Jake Wodtke, putting the Wildcats up, 1-0.
It was the last run K-State (12-4) would score until the bottom of the eighth, as Fagalde (3-0) retired 16 straight Wildcats at one point.
The Highlanders tied things up in the top of the third, with the help of a fielding error by Wodtke at short, and it remained a 1-1 game until the top of the sixth.
Wildcats starter Parker Rigler (2-1) gave up three hits through his first five innings of work, but Connor Cannon singled with one out in the UCR half of the sixth, and Cade Peters laced a double to right to put two runners in scoring position. Two batters later, a passed ball brought Cannon home with the go-ahead run.
In the top of the seventh, Michael Farris drew a one out walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a Colby Schultz' ground out. That ended Rigler's night, as he was replaced by Nick Jones. Cody Sporrer singled up the middle scoring Farris to make it 3-1 UC Riverside.
AJ Sawyer made it a three-run Highlanders lead in the eighth, scoring Skyler de los Reyes with a two-out single through the right side of the infield.
Jared Morton took over for Fagalde to start the bottom of the eighth. Josh Rolette reached on a field error by first baseman Yeager Taykir, and Hanz Harker did likewise on a throwing error by Sporrer at second base. That put Wildcats on second and third, and a balk called on Morton brought Rolette home, reducing UC Riverside's advantage to two, 4-2.
The Highlanders put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth, sending 11 batters to the plate, and scoring seven runs.
Ryan Lillie pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
UC Riverside returns home this week for a Tuesday evening game against Gonzaga at 6 pm PT, and a three-game weekend series against CSU Bakersfield.
