Riverside–The UC Riverside Softball notched a pair of victories on the final day of the UC Riverside Classic Sunday. The Highlanders got past UMKC, 6-2, in the first game of the day, and edged Pacific, 5-4, in the afternoon.
GAME ONE UCR 6 , UMKC 2
In the first game of the day, the Highlanders got strong pitching from Haley Marschall and Anessa Cepeda, who combined to give up five hits over the seven-inning victory. The UCR offense managed just six hits, but was aided by five UMKC errors. Five different Highlanders drove in a run lead by Hannah Rodriguez's first homer of the season in the bottom the sixth.
UC Riverside put up three runs in the second and followed that up with one in third to go ahead 4-0. The Roos brought across a pair of in the top of the fifth on three hits and an error to make it a 4-2 ball game.
Senior Maddy Richard led off the sixth with an infield single. moved to second on a groundout, and forced errant throw when stole third, which allowed her to score. Rodriguez then stepped in and hit a no-doubter just past the scoreboard in left to stake the home side to a 6-2 advantage.
Cepeda preserved the win with a scoreless seventh, and earned her first save of 2017. Marshall moved to 5-4 on the year with the victory.
GAME TWO UCR 5, PACIFIC 4
Stephanie Tickemyer's bases clearing double with one out in the third proved to be the difference the UCR's 5-4 victory over Pacific in the UC Riverside Classic finale.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning, when Shylene Helms drew a walk with the bases loaded for the game's first run. Tickmeyer then stepped in, and drove the first pitch she saw to the fence in left for a three-run double to make it 4-0. The Highlanders would load the bases again with one out in the second, but leave the runners stranded.
The Tigers responded with three runs in the top of the third on four hits. They left two stranded to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, Rebecca Faulkner allowed a two-out RBI double, before striking out Samantha Owen looking for the final out of the game.
Tayler Misfeldt picked up the win having come into the game in the top of the third in relief of starter Cepeda, and Faulkner earned her first save of the year with two innings of work.
UC Riverside ran it's home record to 17-4 with the wins, and concluded the 21-game homestand. Wednesday the team will head to San Diego for a 2 pm affair with the University of San Diego.
