Baseball Drops 10-2 Decision At #23 San Diego

San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team jumped out early 2-0 lead on #23 San Diego Tuesday evening, but the Toreros scored 10 unanswered runs on their way to a 10-2 victory.

Kevin West made his second start of the season for the Highlanders (11-9), and although he didn't allow a hit or a run through his first two innings of work, he did walk two batters and hit another.

UC Riverside's offense handed him a two-run lead in the top of the second as Colby Schultz and AJ Sawyer each drove home a run with two-out singles.

West (0-1) ran into trouble in the third, and walks were an issue again, as he issued free passes to two of the first three hitters of the frame. After a double steal, a Riley Adams sac fly sliced the UCR lead in half, and an RBI single by Jay Schuyler tied the game.

Hazahel Quijada recorded the final out of the frame, and tossed a scoreless fourth, but the Toreros (16-6) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a lead-off homer by Hunter Mercado-Hood. San Diego plated another run in the fifth, scored four more in the sixth, and a pair in the seventh to conclude the scoring.

The Highlanders return home this weekend for the start of Big West play, as they host #10 Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series.
