San Luis Obispo, CA—Angel Landazuri scattered four hits through seven innings and allowed just one run Thursday evening, but his counterpart, Erich Uelmen did him one better, tossing a complete-game, six-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory.
Cal Poly (27-27, 15-7) scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first, thanks in part to a lead off walk. Alex McKenna drew the five-pitch free pass, and stole second to move into scoring position. Two outs later, Michael Sanderson delivered the critical blow, singling up the middle to put the Mustangs on top. Landazuri (4-5) allowed just three more base runners the rest of the way.
Uelmen (4-8) had just two rough patches during his 12-strikeout, one-walk performance. The Highlanders (21-31, 7-15) put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the second, but stranded both runners. In the top of the fourth, UCR placed runners on the corners with two outs, but once again stranded the pair.
The Highlanders and Mustangs play game two of their three-game Big West Conference series on Friday beginning at 6 pm PT.
