Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team improved to 3-1 Friday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Chicago State in game one of the UC Riverside Classic. The Highlanders host San Jose State today at 5 pm PT in game two of the tournament.
SET ONE
Key Run: Trailing 6-5, the Highlanders won six straight points, and never looked back. Three different players—Kaiulani Ahuna, Mikaela Grove and Chelsea Doyle—had kills during the run.
SET TWO
Key Run: With set point for the Cougars at 24-23, the Highlanders scored the final three points of the set to go up 2-0. Three straight attack errors by Chicago State proved to be the difference.
SET THREE
Key Run: Trailing 5-4, UC Riverside scored the next six points, and never gave back the lead. Meg Graham had a pair of kills during the run, and Kassie McGill and Mikaela Grove chipped in one apiece.
GAME NOTES
The 3-1 start to the season ties the best start in the Highlanders' Division I history (2001, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012). UC Riverside has started a season with wins in four of its first five matches on three occasions (2001, 2004, 2005).
Kaiulani Ahuna recorded a season-high 15 kills in the match.
Brooke Callahan had her string of three straight matches with double-digit kills snapped.
Nicole Rodriguez has double digit digs in each of her four matches this season.
Chelsea Doyle has at least 36 assist in each of her four matches this season, and 41 or more in her last three matches.
