Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team closed out its first home tournament in style Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Howard. That ran the Highlanders' record to 5-1 on the season, and gave them a perfect 3-0 mark at this weekend's UC Riverside Classic.
SET ONE (25-16, UCR)
Key Run: Howard cut the UCR lead to 15-14, but the Highlanders countered by scoring the next seven points to take control of the first set. Fabiana Rosas had three kills during the run.
SET TWO (25-18, UCR)
Key Run: The Bison scored the first point of the second set, but the Highlanders picked up the next four giving them a lead they would never relinquish.
SET THREE (25-15, UCR)
Key Run: Howard scored six of the first seven points to start the set, but UC Riverside countered by scoring 11 of the next 13 to go up by four. After the Bison closed to within one at 13-12, UCR scored eight of the next nine to pull away.
GAME NOTES
The 5-1 start to the season ties the best start in the Highlanders' Division I history (2001, 2004, 2005). The 2001 UC Riverside squad began the season with seven wins in its first eight matches, and the 2004 team won eight of its first nine. The 2005 team began the year 11-1.
The Highlanders have three, 3-0 sweeps to their credit through six matches in 2017. They only had three, 3-0 sweeps throughout the entirety of the 2016 campaign.
Fabiana Rosas recorded a season-high 16 kills, and has back-to-back double-digit kill efforts having notched 12 vs. San Jose State on Friday evening.
Meg Graham recorded double-digit kills for the fourth time this season, which leads the team.
