RIVERSIDE, Calif.— The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team had its win streak halted Wednesday night as the Highlanders fell 3-1 to to the visiting UC Irvine Anteaters in the Big West opener for both teams. The Highlanders found late success in front of a packed UCR Soccer Stadium, but UCI would hang on for its first conference win.
Neither team found the net for 20 minutes as the strong Highlander defense kept the Anteaters off the board despite having a few good looks in close quarters.
The Anteaters broke the silence in the 20th minute scoring from up close to take a 1-0 lead. UCI would grab another off of a corner kick in the 35th minute to end the 1st half up 2-0.
In the 58th minute UCI would find its third and final goal of the match playing a deep ball to an attacking midfielder who was able to serve up a short pass for a redirect and an Anteater goal.
Down 3-0, sophomore Daniel Aguirre would again work his late-match magic scoring off of a 20-yard free kick in the 90th minute for his 4th goal of the season. Three of his goals have now come in the 85th minute or later.
The Highlanders totaled seven shots in the game, five of which were on goal. Junior goalkeeper Edwyn Gutierrez added three saves on the day.
UC Riverside will now continue Big West play on the road this weekend as the Highlanders will visit Cal Poly this Saturday. The match is set to start at 7:00 PM and live streaming will be available on BigWest.TV.
