Women's Golf Finishes Third In Home Tournament Battle At The Rock, Hana Furuichi Sixth

Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Golf Team tied for third at its home tournament, Battle at the Rock, Tuesday. First place leader Hana Furuichi dropped five positions during the third round, finishing sixth with a score of 72-68-75=215.

TOURNAMENT NOTES
Junior Hana Furuichi, who led the first two rounds of the tournament, started the third round four-under-par (140). Furuichi fell in the final round, placing sixth overall at -1 (215). She led the Highlanders on Par 4's, tying second overall at -1, and on Par 5's tied eighth overall at -2. Furuichi also led the Highlanders in birdies with 10, tying 10th overall. 

Hannah Facchini finished 10th overall and second on the team. Facchini's best holes were the Par 4's, tying 12th overall at +1. She was second best overall in pars, shooting 40 over the course's 54 holes. 

Jakeishya Le tied for 14th and came in third for UCR. Le also tied with Furuichi for eighth on Par 5's at -2, and led the Highlanders on Par 3's (+1), tied 10th overall. 

Serena Chon (T25) competed as an individual for the Highlanders and tied Furuichi for 10th overall, shooting 10 birdies during the tournament. 

UCR's best holes were the Par 4's, tying for first with UC Davis at +18. The Highlanders shot 166 pars during the tournament, only two pars back of NAU and four pars behind UC Davis' 170 pars for first place. The Highlanders improved by two pars over their 164 pars shot during their previous tournament at the UC Irvine Invitational (Recap)

The other Big West teams that competed in the tournament were Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Hawai'i and UC Davis. The Highlanders were 12 strokes back of first place UC Davis, and only four strokes back of second-place Hawai'i. UC Davis finished first as both a team and individually in the tournament. Samantha Hutchison of UC Davis won with a score of 69-72-70 =211, five shots under par. 

OTHER NOTABLE MOMENTS
There was added excitement when two players forced a tiebreak at the end of the final round. Golfers Samantha Hutchison (UC Davis) and Alice Duan (CSUN) were tied at 211 (-5) after the final round's scores became official. A tie-break was held on hole 17, but each of the ladies birdied the hole. The tiebreak continued onto hole 18, where the two opponents again tied after shooting par. Returning to hole 17, Hutchison claimed the Individual Champion title after out shooting Duan on their third tie-breaker hole.

Individual Champion Samantha Hutchison shot a hole-in-one on hole 14, Battle at the Rock's signature hole, during the second round of the tournament.
