Riverside, Calif.— The UC Riverside Softball Team (10-5) completed its first home tournament, the Amy S. Harrison Classic, with a 3-1 record after splitting a pair of games Sunday afternoon. The Highlanders fell 3-2 to Montana in the first game, but bounced back with a dominant 8-1 win over New Mexico.
UCR has been very successful as of late winning eight of its last ten games and improving its home record to 4-1.
MONTANA
The Highlanders got out to a slow start against the Grizzlies, as Montana scored three runs in the first two innings.
UC Riverside got on the board in the 6th inning as junior Brittany Garcia singled to right-center, bringing in freshman Seanna Garewal. Sophomore Emma Ramelot would come around to score on a ball put in play by senior Jenae Lockwood to cut the score to 3-2.
Down one run in the bottom of the 2nd with two outs, Garewal gave life to the Highlanders with a clutch double to left-center. Senior Jenna Curtan was next to bat ripping a hard hit ball to deep center field, but the Montana was able to run it down for the final out.
NEW MEXICO
UCR's second game of the day, against the Lobos, marked another start for pitcher Tayler Misfeldt. After an unearned run was scored in the 1st inning by New Mexico, the senior only allowed the Lobos two additional hits and no runs, while striking out eight.
Just one inning later, The Highlanders would tie the game and take their first lead. Lockwood would leaf-off in the inning with a huge stand-up triple and would come around to score on a a single from senior Rebecca Faulkner. Sophomore Karter Williams would hit the field to run for Faulkner and would score on a single from Garewal to give UCR a 2-1 lead.
The Highlanders would do their most damage in the bottom of the 3rd with one swing of the bat. With two runners on base, freshman Raena Robinson stepped to the plate and smacked her first career home run over the center field wall, extending the team's lead 5-1.
UCR added another run its next time up as Ramelot scored on a sacrifice fly from Lockwood.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, the team threatened to end the game early, adding two more runs off a single from sophomore Sarah Parten that cleared the bases and gave the Highlanders an 8-1 victory over the Lobos.
