LAST TIME OUT
UC Riverside finished 7th at the Wyoming Desert Tournament exactly one month ago. Brandon Tsujimoto led the Highlanders and tied for 10th overall, carding a 71-71-68=210 over the 54 holes. This feat earned Tsujimoto the Big West Golfer of the Month Award.
NEXT UP
UC Riverside will travel to Santa Barbara next month to compete in the UCSBÂ Invitational at the Sand Piper Golf Club. This will be the last regular season competition for the Highlanders.
ROTATE!
The Highlanders had three different golfers lead them at each of their first three fall tournaments: Tyler Moore at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational; Bahram Talle at the Nick Watney Intercollegiate, and Brandon Tsujimoto at the Bill Cullum Invitational.
DAZZLING DEBUT
Tyler Moore's three-round total of 205 at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational was the third lowest in UC Riverside's Division I history, behind only Brendan Steele's 203 in the 2004-05 Braveheart Classic and Scott Clayton's 204 in the 14th Annual Del Walker Intercollegiate in the 2009-10 campaign.
CHAMPIONSHIP RUNS
The UC Riverside Men's Golf Team won the 2015-16 Big West Championship, building a six-stroke lead heading into the final round to hold off second-place Cal Poly. The Highlanders went on to a three-stroke victory, taking home their first conference championship since 2005 (story).
BACK FOR THE ATTACK!
UC Riverside returns three of its top five golfers from a year ago: Andrew Spilman (74.6), Matt Lutz (76.1), and Michael Wong (76.9). They also have Brandon Tsujimoto back in the fold, as the red-shirt senior sat out the 2016-17 campaign with an injury. During his junior season, he finished third on the team in scoring average at 76.9. He finished second on the team at the 2016 Big West Championship, tying for 12th overall by shooting two-over par for the tournament.
GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
The Highlanders graduated three seniors a year ago: Sam Gillis, who led the team with a 73.97 scoring average last season, and ranks third on UC Riverside's career scoring average list at 73.63; Pachara Sakulyong who ranked fifth on the team in scoring average at 78.52; and Andrew Bradley who ranked sixth at 79.83.
QUICK OUT OF THE GATES
UC Riverside won its first tournament of the 2016-17 season, beating out Texas Tio Grande Valley, Menlo College and host CSU Bakersfield to take the Roadrunner Invitational from September 19-20—the first regular-season tournament victory for the Highlanders under Coach Todd.
