Riverside, Calif. – The UC Riverside Track and Field teams hosted their first home meet of the season this Thursday-Saturday – the annual UCR Spring Track Classic – with both teams finishing tied for third place.
One of the highlights of the meet for the Highlanders came in the Women's 4x200 Relay, as Camille Deadwiler, Tayler Fleming, Destiny Mitchell and Kenady Jackson set the school record with a time of 1:38.46.
"We had a strong weekend here at home. I feel like we made some really good progress on qualifying marks, on lifetime bests, and seeing our folks get better each week," Head Coach Nate Browne said. "We still have some work to do as far as just ironing out some technical things, but we were really pleased with the number of qualifying marks we came away with."
MEN
The men posted a team score of 98, tying with Southern Utah and behind only Sacramento State (134) and Utah Valley (107). In a pool of nine schools, the Highlanders placed ahead of the three other Big West teams in competition, as they were followed by UC Irvine (78) in fifth, Long Beach State in eighth (54) and Cal State Fullerton in ninth (31).
UC Riverside came away with several first place finishes on the men's side, starting with the 800m Relay and the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay on Friday.
Freshman Anthony Reyes impressed with a lifetime best mark of 7.30m in the Long Jump, while junior Ricky Wright Jr. finished right behind with a third place mark of 7.25m.
WOMEN
The Highlander women also finished tied for third, as they and North Dakota State posted an identical team score of 76. Sacramento State (156) and UC Irvine (87.5) took the top two spots, while Cal State Fullerton (59.5) and Long Beach State (52) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, out of ten teams.
Senior Faith Makau was one of the leaders on the women's side, as she took first place in the 800m.
COACH'S TAKE
"On Thursday, we had a nice atmosphere as far as weather goes and you could see kids trying to rise to the occasion. We're starting to see the progress, and we're hoping we can start rolling down the hill as we keep moving through the season. If we can perform well at home despite all the finals pressure, and next week without having finals, and the kids kind of getting to relax, I think we'll be in good shape." - Coach Browne
NEXT MEET
The Highlanders will be back in action from Mar. 30-31 at the Stanford Invitational.
