Durham, N.C.— The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team (14-12) won its 4th straight match Friday afternoon edging out North Carolina Central 4-3. The Highlanders collected their 14th win of the season which ties for the most wins in a single season in program history.
"Nice to win and tie the record for wins for one season at UCR, as well as winning the 900th match that I have coached," Head Coach Mattias Johansson said. "We had a great road trip going 5-1."
N.C. Central took an early lead claiming the doubles round and two of the first three singles matches to go up 3-1, but the resilient Highlanders found a way to win with the match on the line.Â
On court four, sophomore Nabil Abdallah found himself down 3-6, 1-4 (0-30), but battled back to keep the Highlanders alive with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory. Freshman Fillip Engstrom was the next off the courts tying the match at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court five, and freshman Vignesh Subramanyan would play the hero once again this season clinching a 4-3 win for UCR with a nearly perfect 6-0, 6-1 win on court six.
The Highlanders now return home to open Big West play this Sunday at 2:00 PM when the team faces Cal Poly.
