IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Riverside Women's Golf Team heads out to the Strawberry Farms Golf Course in Irvine this Sunday through Tuesday, Apr. 15-17 to compete in the 2018 Big West Championship.
The Highlanders enter the tournament two years removed from taking home the 2016 title at the Kapalua Bay Course in Hawaii. That year, they made a final-round push to erase a three-stroke deficit, winning by four shots for the program's first conference championship.
Last year, UC Riverside nearly repeated in a similar dramatic fashion. After entering the final round 12 shots back of eventual champion Cal Poly, the Highlanders shot a 289 to finish as runners-up, just one shot shy of forcing a championship playoff.
UCR enters this year's championship coming off one of its best tournament's of the year at the Bobcat Desert Invitational in Arizona. Senior Hannah Facchini shot a 68 and 69 over the final two rounds – at least four strokes better than all 85 other golfers – to make a late push for second-place and move the Highlanders into third overall.
The third-place finish tied for their top finish of the year. The other two times they finished in third came at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on October 1 and as hosts of the Battle at the Rock in mid-February.
UC Riverside heads into Round 1 on Sunday with a No. 104 ranking from Golfstat. At No. 68, Long Beach State enters with the highest ranking among Big West schools.
Below are the Highlanders' Big West Championship lineup and first round tee time:
#1 Hannah Facchini, 10:36 a.m. - Earlier this week, the two-time All-Big West First Teamer earned her first career Big West Golfer of the Month after finishing as the runner-up at the Bobcat Desert Invitational with a score of 2-under par 214. Facchini's other top-10 finish of the year came when she shot a 4-over 220 at the Battle at the Rock. Facchini enters the Big West Championship coming off of consecutive team-leading performances.
#2 Hana Furuichi, 10:27 a.m. - Had her best tournament of the year at the Battle at the Rock, when she led UCR with a sixth-place finish, her best of the year. She shot a 1-under 215, saving her best for Round 2, when she shot a 68 to lead the field. Furuichi would also tie for first on her team at the Aggie Invitational (T-15th overall) and at the Fresno State Classic (T-22nd).
#3 Jakeishya Le, 10:18 a.m. - UC Riverside's Scholar Athlete of the Year enters her third tournament with two First Team All-Conference selections. Last year, she shattered the program's single-season scoring average (73.59). In her junior year, she has continued to shine, finishing first on her team in five out of nine events. Her two top-10 finishes came when she tied for fifth at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (79-73-73, 225) and when she tied for 10th at the Anteater Invitational (75-74-71, 220).
#4 Julia Sander, 10:09 a.m. - Her top finish this year came when she tied for 17th at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, shooting a 16-over 232. Her best round of the year occurred at the Las Vegas Intercollegiate, when she shot a 71 in Round 3 and finished just six shots over par.
#5 Hailey White, 10:00 a.m. - Highest placing was when she tied for 33rd at the Fresno State Classic with a score of 16-over 232. She has finished in the top-50 in every tournament this year. White's best round was when she shot a 74 to open the Battle at the Rock in February.
18 holes will be played on the par-71, 6,700 yard course on each of the three days, with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. off hole no. 1.
