HONOLULU, Hawaii – Dean Miller's three-RBI double in the top of the sixth nearly brought UC Riverside (13-15, 3-4) back for its third consecutive series-opening win, but a late run by Hawaii (19-11, 5-2) put the Rainbow Warriors over the top in a 5-4 victory.
The Highlanders' only other run came from AJ Sawyer on a Brenden Avventino ground out RBI a day earlier, before rain delays postponed the game until early Saturday afternoon.
After that run tied things at 1-1 in the top of the third, Hawaii took control with three runs over the third and fourth innings. It would remain a 4-1 game until UCR got hot in the sixth.
All of the Highlanders' sixth inning contributors stepped up with two outs on the board. Connor Cannon reached first after being hit by a pitch, followed by a double by Nathan Webb and a walk for Cody Sporrer. That was Webb's team-leading 12 double of the year.
Miller's clutch double to left field tied things at 4-4. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, Hawaii tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth, and UCR was unable to convert its final two hits of the game into a tying run.
Miller recorded 3 RBI for the second time this season, whiel Avventino's was his first since Mar. 14.
