Webb Hits First Career Home Run, But Opportunistic Matadors Top Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside ended its Sunday series-finale against CSUN (15-16, 4-2) with a 9-to-7 advantage in hits, but the Matadors came away with 6-1 victory thanks to a hot start out of the gates.

The loss moves the Highlanders to 13-13 overall and 3-3 in Big West competition.

Although UC Riverside would leave six runners on base in the game, third baseman Nathan Webb left no doubt with his final at bat, crushing his first career home run to left field in the bottom of the eighth. That was the Highlanders' fifth home run of the opening two weekends of conference play, good for second in the Big West.

Webb finished 3-for-3, also hitting a single and a double and earning one of UCR's two walks. Since the start of conference, the freshman leads the Big West in hits (12), total bases (19) and slugging (.826) and ranks second in batting average (.522) and doubles (4).

Redshirt senior Tony Gudino recorded two hits, while senior shortstop Colby Schultz chipped in with one as well. Schultz now has a hit in five of his last six outings.

Although the Highlanders' scoring dropped off a bit in their second conference series, they have still continued to rack up the extra-base hits, leading the pack with a .517 slugging percentage as a team.

UC Riverside will remain home for its next game, a non-conference midweek matchup with San Diego on Tuesday, playing the final game of a ten-game home stand.
