LOS ANGELES, Calif.— The Highlanders are off to the final day of the NISC Championship after the UC Riverside Softball Team (38-23) bested Eastern Kentucky (45-21) for the 2nd day in a row with a 7-1 win. UCR will now rematch LMU tomorrow in the championship round and will need to defeat the Lions twice to earn the title.
The Highlanders have been nearly perfect in their first postseason appearance reaching the final day of the NISC boasting a 5-1 record and outscoring their opponents 35-10.
Senior Tayler Misfeldt, who has started every postseason game for the Highlanders excluding their first matchup with Nevada, took the circle again tossing her 5th complete game of the NISC. She again lifted her Highlanders to victory shutting down a strong offensive team for the 2nd time in two days by only allowing one run, eight hits, and three walks, while striking out five. The veteran pitcher picked up her 21st win of the season, which ties her personal best from her sophomore season.
The Highlanders got on the board first scoring on an error in the 2nd inning, but did most of their damage later in the game scoring three runs in both the 5th and 6th innings.
EKU tied the game at 1-1 with a run of its own in the 4th, but allowed eight hits and six runs in the next to inning as UCR sealed a 7-1 win.
In the 4th junior Brittney Garcia, freshman Seanna Garewal, and senior Jenna Curtan all collected RBI singles to give regain the lead 4-1. Junior Amanda Lynch made another bases-loaded pinch hit appearance in the 5th smacking an single, and freshman Seanna Garewal capped off UCR's scoring efforts with an RBI double.
Garewal was had another strong offensive outing going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Senior Jenae Lockwood added a hit, two walks, and two runs.
The NISC Championship started just over a week ago with 17 teams and now just two remain. A winner will be crowned tomorrow afternoon.
