Women's Soccer Scores in Overtime to Win First Game of Season

Riverside, Calif.—Maddy Feist sure has a flair for the dramatic.

In the first game of the UC Riverside women's soccer season, the midfielder scored in the 99th minute from 25 yards out to give the Highlanders a 1-0 win over Saint Mary's.

After the ball went into the net, the crowd roared, the team jumped all over Feist and the men's soccer team, who was in attendance, rushed onto the field.

"I knew when I got around my player that I had a chance," Feist said. "I'm definitely stoked. It was a great way to start out our season and our crowd was amazing."

With her legs heavy after regulation, Feist didn't even begin the overtime period. Instead, coach Nat Gonzalez waited until he thought Feist got most of her energy back.

The senior was there when the team needed her the most, pushing her body to the next level.

While the first half proved to have little scoring chances, the energy and scoring opportunities picked up for the Highlanders in the second half. At halftime, coach Nat Gonzalez spoke to his team about being more tactical and using their speed to find opportunities to score on the edges, not just up the middle.

Long after the game, Gonzalez was still on the field and able to reflect on what had just happened.

"I definitely won't be sleeping tonight," Gonzalez said with a grin.
