RIVERSIDE, Calif.—If you came to the UC Riverside Women's Soccer match against Fresno State on Friday night even a minute late, you missed it.
Just 46 seconds in, on a cross from the left side, Maddie Feist belted a shot past the Bulldogs goal keeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottman. Kyra Taylor and Allyssa Troy assisted on the goal.
It's been a miraculous season so far for Feist. In just four games, she has three goals and one assist.
"I knew because of where the keeper was I would have to hit it to the far post. I put a little bit of spin on it and it went in, Feist said.
"Fresno beat us 1-0 last year, so we wanted to come out with more grit. They are a good size, so we really had to dig in."
The Highlanders weren't done scoring in the first half. In the 34th minute, Quinley Quezada scored her second goal of the season after striking a ball that bounced off the back of a Bulldogs defender.
UCR has now started the season 4-0 and also has four shutouts. The last time the Highlanders won four straight games was last season from Sept. 24-Oct. 5.
Head coach Nat Gonzalez and the rest of the coaches could tell from Thursday's practice and Friday's warmups that they were ready to play.
"Us coming out fast is exactly what I wanted to see," Gonzalez said. "I was super happy. Goal or no goal, I was just happy with the way we came out of the gate and kept them on their heels."
While the team is off to a great start, Gonzalez is making sure the squad is not getting too far ahead of themselves.
"At the end of the day, I've always told them that me pushing them is coming from the right place. If you start changing the way you coach based off of wins and losses, it's not real, Gonzalez said.
"I always emphasize that we need to get five percent better every game so you aren't looking at what you accomplished, but how you can get better win, loss or tie."
