SACRAMENTO, Calif.— The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team finished out the Sacramento State Tournament Saturday falling 3-1 to the host Hornets and 3-2 to Nevada.
Sacramento State
The Highlanders opened up their first match of the day on a high note taking the first set 25-17 over the Hornets, but Sacramento State would retaliate to take the next three sets 12-19-20.
The first set was dominated by UCR as the team boasted a nine point lead at 22-13 and won the kill battle 14-10.
Sophomore Yuliya Ushakova and freshman Nailah Jones led the Highlander attack notching 11 kills each, which was the second most in the match. Senior Chelsea Doyle added 30 assists and showed off her versatility with 16 digs.
Despite earning a 3-1 loss, UCR bested the Hornets in several categories in the overall match such as kills, attacking errors, and handling errors.
Nevada
The Wolf Pack took an early lead in the final matchup of the tournament with a 25-17 first set, but the Highlanders would earn a second set victory 25-20 to ice the match. Both teams would grab another set to force a fifth and final set, but Nevada would take it 15-9 to win the overall match 3-2.
Jones was an offensive force for the Highlanders collecting a career-high 15 kills. Sophomore Yuliya Ushakova and freshman Christina Escamilla added another 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Following the final match of the tournament, senior setter Chelsea Doyle was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Highlanders will compete in one more regular season tournament next weekend as UCR is set to face Idaho and San Francisco in the Titan Tournament.
