Women's Soccer Tops UC Davis on Senior Day

RIVERSIDE—It was an emotional day at UCR Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon, as the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team celebrated its Senior Day in its matchup with visiting UC Davis. The Highlanders would honor seniors Isabella Lee, Sienna Zabroski, Amanda Roy, and Annie Bailey in the pregame, and 90 minutes later the team would emerge victorious 2-0. The seniors had junior Alexis Vera to thank, who punched in both goals for UCR.

"To be completely honest, today's match was magical," Zabroski said. "We've had our struggles this season, but have also fought really hard and have been persistent, so to get this win on senior day meant a lot to us."

With this win UCR improved to 1-4-0 in Big West Conference play capturing its first win, while UCD fell to 1-5-0.

Both teams went scoreless into the half, but the match was clearly dominated by the Highlanders all afternoon, holding the ball in their attacking third and coming up just short on some great opportunities they created for themselves. The emotions and tenacity spiked early on the match as the Aggies Leslie Fregoso made a dangerous play that would see keeper Bailey put out with an injury for the rest of the match after just 11 minutes. The UC Davis midfielder would receive just a yellow card after flying into Bailey with her knee out in front. Freshman Caela Kaio would replace Bailey for the remainder of the match.

Out of the half, the Highlanders looked composed and ready to score and in the 60th min they would find the game winner. Sophomore Natza Marin Played a long ball to Vera who fired off a shot at the Aggie keeper, who deflected it right back at Vera for the rebound and tap-in.

In the 80th minute, Vera would strike again receiving a pass from sophomore Akari Shimizu and beating the Aggie back line to get a one-on-one with the keeper. She would blast one past her to give her team a commanding 2-0 lead that it would hold on to for the win.

The Highlanders will now hit the road for the final three matches of the regular season.

"The rest of the season starts with how we prepare tomorrow at practice," Zabroski said. "We have to keep working and playing like we did today and the result will show up for us. I think we have it going now and we are really excited for the rest of the season"
