Highlanders Strike First but Fall to CSUN

RIVERSIDE—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (2-9-1) dropped its second conference match Sunday night as the CSUN Matadors (7-4-3) emerged with the 3-1 win. The Highlanders were the first on the board with a goal in the 39th minute from junior Maria Gallardo, but CSUN would answer would three straight to earn its first Big West win.

It appeared both teams would go into the half scoreless, until the Highlanders notched a great opportunity thanks to an aggressive run at the goal. Sophomore Natza Marin played a ball into senior Neyda Martinez who fired off a shot that would be saved by CSUN keeper Amanda Delgado, only for Gallardo to tap in the rebound for her first goal of the season.

Unfortunately for the Highlanders, the Matadors would answer quickly with two goals before halftime, and added a third in the 85th to seal the match.

UCR took 10 shots on the night, landing three on frame, compared to CSUN's 14 shots, with eight on frame.

UC Riverside spread its 10 shots among eight different players and senior keeper Annie Bailey ended the match with five saves.

The team will look for its first conference win this Sunday when its hosts Cal State Fullerton.
