Men's Soccer Drops Conference Opener
10/9/2019 10:23:00 PM | Men's Soccer
IRVINE—A strong second half for UC Irvine (4-4-4, 1-0-0) would see the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (5-5-2, 0-1-0) fall 2-0 in the first contest of the conference season Wednesday night.
Both teams went scoreless into the half, but in the second period, the 'Eater offense would come alive as Jose Ortiz fired in the first goal of the day from the top of the box in the 64th minute. Just eight minutes later the team would strike again with Michael Orozco punching in the second goal of the match to take a 2-0 lead and the victory.
The Highlanders only managed to put up five shots on the night, three of which were on frame, compared to UCI which took nine or more shots in each half. The 'Eaters were in their attacking third for much of the night registering 11 corners.
Junior keeper Leonardo Targia made his first ever appearance for the Highlanders playing all 90 minutes between the posts and registering four saves. Seniors Uros Ilic and Roberto Garcia-Vargas, as well as sophomore Caio Guazelli, all landed shots on frame.
UC Riverside will now return home to host Cal Poly this Saturday.
