Highlanders Take First Loss at Sac State

Presented by Altura Credit Union

SACRAMENTO—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team (2-1) took its first loss Friday night to host Sacramento State (2-0) 62-49. The Hornets knocked off the Highlanders by playing 40 minutes of solid basketball, dictating the pace and sticking to their game: a heavy defensive effort supported by a strong interior offense.

From the moment the ball tipped off, Sac State did not let the UCR get into a rhythm, crowding the passing lanes and forcing the Highlanders to a 4-for-25 shooting performance from the field in the first half with eight turnovers. The visiting team encountered several scoring droughts and could not buy a bucket from beyond the arch going 1-for-9.

The second half saw a determined Highlander team that improved tremendously from the first period, making the most of its possessions on its way to a .500 shooting performance. UCR brought the Sac State lead all the way down to just seven with under three minutes to go, but just couldn't put together the run needed to take the late lead.

Junior Dominick Pickett led the scoring efforts for the Highlanders totaling 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting, while knocking down all six of his free-throw attempts. Sophomore big Callum McRae added a quiet double-double for the second straight game putting up 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Despite a tough outing by UCR, the team managed to keep the game within striking distance throughout, never giving up and giving itself an opportunity to earn the victory. Unfortunately the Hornets were determined and held on just enough towards the end to stay on top.

UCR now has a quick turn around, heading south to take on Pacific of the West Coast Conference in a Sunday matinee.
