Women’s Basketball Wins-In The New Year With Hard-Fought Victory Over CSU Bakersfield

Presented by Altura Credit Union

RIVERSIDE, CA— The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team only led CSU Bakersfield for 18 seconds in the second half, fortunately for the Highlanders, it was the final 18 seconds of a hard-fought game that resulted in a, 53-52, victory at the SRC Arena.

UC Riverside (4-10, 0-0) got the game-winning score from Daphne Gnago, who calmly collected the ball near the top of the key, drove to the basket, and scored over a contesting CSU Bakersfield (8-5, 0-0) defender.

"This was exactly the kind of game we needed. We had to compete hard and execute for an extended period of time to stay in the game, and more importantly, get this win." said Head Coach Seyram Bell.

Jannon Otto led the way for the Highlanders with 16 points and game-highs of 13 rebounds and five assists. For Otto, it was her third double-double and fifth double-digit effort on the glass this season.

Keilanei Cooper scored 12 points to post double figures for the second time in three contests. With 3:05 to play, she buried the first three-pointer of the game for UCR in 12 attempts, which cut the CSU Bakersfield lead to just one, 50-49.

Marina Ewodo added 10 points to blue and gold cause to make it a trio of Highlanders in double figures. She would score the game-tying bucket on a feed from, her fellow French National, Gnago in the paint. Ewodo also pulled down nine boards, eight of them of the defensive variety ending Roadrunner possessions.

With the score 51 apiece, and the shot clock running down Gnago put the Highlanders ahead with her score. Out of the timeout, Bakersfield missed on a drive to the cup, but got the offensive board and was fouled on the putback attempt. They made the first free-throw, missed the second, got the rebound, and put up a shot that went begging as time expired.

LOOKING FORWARD
The Highlanders return to action next decade on January 9th, when they open Big West Conference play at home against UC Davis at 7pm.
