Softball Tops Maryland 7-2 in Tourney Rematch

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—After a tough outing in the opening day of the Amy S. Harrison Classic, the UC Riverside Softball Team bounced back Saturday afternoon taking down Maryland of the Big 10 Conference 7-2. Behind a great pitching duo and timely hitting UCR would take a first inning lead and never surrender it for its first win of the weekend.

The Terrapins got out to a quick start with a lead-off triple that they would bring home to take a 1-0 lead, but freshman pitcher Megan Casper quickly settled in shutting out the next three innings to earn her first career win. The Highlander rookie ended with 4 innings pitched allowing just five hits and two earned runs, while striking out nine.

Casper's teammates didn't waste any time on the offensive end racking up three runs on just one hit in the bottom of the first. With two on, senior Brittney Garcia stepped to plate and doubled down the left line to tie the game at 1-1, and bases-loaded walks from both freshmen Moana Pisia and Sami Demyon gave UCR a 3-1 lead.

UMD would add its second and final run of the game in the top of three provoking another big inning for the Highlanders as the team strung together three hits in a two out rally that extended the lead to 6-4. Demyon and freshman Haylee Kela added RBIs in the inning with clutch hitting.

Junior Melanie Olmos would enter the circle in the fifth inning and held it down for her team pitching three hitless innings to end the game allowing just one walk while striking out three. In the sixth, Olmos helped her own cause with an RBi single up the middle to close out the game 7-2.

Freshman Moana Pisia added another solid day at the plate going 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk, a run, and an RBI.
