Baseball Finishes Four-Game Road Trip At Grand Canyon

PHOENIX—The UC Riverside Baseball team will finish out a four-game road trip with a quick game against Grand Canyon University on Tuesday.

GCU and UCR played each other twice last season, with each team winning a game. The teams will play again in Riverside on May 14.

The Highlanders (2-6) will send hard-throwing right-hander Connor Cannon to the hill. This will mark his first start (second appearance) of the season. Expect to see Cannon as a weekend starter down the road.

The Lopes (3-4) are coming off of a three-game series against No. 18 TCU in which they won the first game. Right-hander Brodie Cooper-Vassalakis gets the nod. This will mark his first start of the season.

The Highlanders are coming off of a tough 5-4 walk-off loss to San Jose State. However, a positive sign in the game was the amount of power the team showed. Cannon hit a solo home run in the second inning, while Matt Hardy hit a three-run shot in the sixth.

Behind the plate will likely be freshman Alec Arnone, who's been a standout on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. He's currently hitting .368 with three RBIs on the season. It's the second-best average on the team.

The team will face Cal Baptist in a three-game series beginning on Friday. Saturday's game will be played at CBU, while Sunday's will be back at the Plex.
