Baseball Loses Doubleheader to Rider and San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO—The UC Riverside Baseball team gave it everything they had in Sunday's doubleheader against Rider and San Francisco, but couldn't come away with a win in either game.

UCR (6-11) had late leads in both games, but wound up taking a 4-2 loss to Rider and then a 4-3 loss to San Francisco in 13 innings.

GAME 1
Scoreless through six innings vs. Rider, the Highlanders got on the board in the seventh inning when Nick Kafer hit a two-run home run down the left field line. His first home run of the season, Kafer now has six RBIs.

The Highlanders got another solid start from right-hander Riley Ohl, who allowed one run on seven hits in six innings for the no decision. It marked his longest outing of the season.

After Ohl allowed the first three runners to reach in the seventh inning, head coach Troy Percival decided to go to the bullpen with a run already in. Jared Noonan took the hill and made quick work of Rider, getting the team to ground into a 5-4-3 double play and then hit into a groundout to end the frame.

However, Noonan didn't have the same success in the eighth. After getting the first two batters out, Noonan found himself in trouble after allowing a single and hitting a batter. The right-hander then allowed another hit that scored a runner from second and tied the game at 2-2.

Following the controversial safe call at home, Percival engaged in a heated discussion with the umpire, debating the decision, but to no avail. It resulted in his ejection. The next batter then proceeded to hit a double to left center field on the first pitch to give Rider a 4-2 lead.

Overall, Noonan allowed three runs on three hits in two innings in what turned out to be his second loss of the season.

GAME 2
With little time to think about the loss, the Highlanders did their best to move on and focus on their newest opponent: San Francisco.

It was pitcher by committee in Game 2. Alec Arnone made his first start of the season, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings. Devin Mckesson and Hayden Petrovick dominated over the next five innings. They combined to allow just two hits and struck out seven batters.

The Highlanders used their power to get on the board in the fourth inning. Dean Miller started out the inning with a single, before Matt Hardy hit a two-run home run to left field on the first pitch. Nathan Webb then belted a solo shot to left field on a 0-1 pitch to give UCR a 3-2 lead. It marked the second time this season that the team hit back-to-back home runs.

With Abbott Haffar on the hill in the ninth, the Dons were down to their final strike twice, but an RBI single by Jonathan Allen tied the game at 3-3. A thorn in the team's side the entire game, he belted a two-run home run in the first inning.

San Francisco put a runner in scoring position in the 11th inning against Haffar, who pitched a total of five innings, but he got out of the jam via strikeout and a line drive back to the mound.

However, in the 13th inning, after a single by Jacob Westermen, a passed ball and a throwing error allowed him to advance to third. Jason Kreske then placed a bunt down the first base line to score Westerman.

The team will get a few days off before beginning a three-game series with Tulane in New Orleans on Friday.
