Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Tulane on Saturday

NEW ORLEANS—The UC Riverside Baseball team split a doubleheader vs. Tulane on Saturday, with Game 1 ending in a 10-1 loss and Game 2 ending in a 10-1 win.

A doubleheader was an unexpected twist in the series after Friday's game got rained out. UCR (7-12) will now finish off the three-game series vs. Tulane (12-7) in the rubber match on Sunday at 11 a.m.

GAME 1
After an RBI double by Dean Miller to put the Highlanders on the board in the second inning, Tulane answered right back to put a crooked number on the scoreboard. It tallied five runs in the bottom of the second. Unfortunately, four of the five runs were unearned.

Tulane plated a run on an RBI double by Jonathon Artigues, before Nathan Webb committed an error at third base. It proved to be costly. Later in the inning with two outs, Trevor Jensen belted a three-run home run to left field and Kody Hoese hit a solo home run to left field.

Highlanders starter Shamus Lyons had a tough time rebounding after the second inning. He finished the day allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits in 2 2/3 innings for the loss. The right-hander is now 2-3 on the season with a 4.91 ERA.

UCR allowed five more runs after the second inning, but Cole Tucker was a bright spot for the Highlanders. He allowed no hits and two walks over two innings.

GAME 2
It would have been easy for the Highlanders to dwell on the Game 1 loss. Instead, UCR gave Tulane a taste of its own medicine.

With the game scoreless after three innings, UCR took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. The team wouldn't stop there. In the fifth inning, the Highlanders scored four runs .

With two runners on base and two outs, Dylan Orick hit an RBI double down the left field line, before Connor Cannon stepped to the plate. On a 2-2 pitch, Cannon belted a three-run home run to left field to give the Highlanders a commanding 5-0 lead.

Cannon continues to be a power threat in the middle of the lineup. He is batting .306 on the season and has a team-high three home runs. Going 3-for-5 in the game, he was one of four Highlanders to have at least two hits.

The Highlanders did more damage in the seventh inning and scored four more runs (two earned) to increase their lead to 10-0. Taking advantage of two errors by Tulane, nine batters came to the plate in the inning. Cannon reached base on an error by the third baseman to begin the inning and then Yeager Taylor singled through the right side, marking his third hit in the game. Matt Hardy had an RBI double to score Taylor and Webb followed that up with an RBI single.

Riley Ohl was once again a dominant force on the mound. Pounding his fastball for strikes, the right-hander went six innings, allowing just three hits for the win. He improved to 3-1 on the season with a 2.31 ERA and is quickly becoming the team's best and most reliable starter.

Jared Noonan picked up right where Ohl left off, allowing one run on three hits in three innings of work for his second save of the season.
