Lynch's Run-Rule Walk-Off Gives Softball Eighth Straight Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The UC Riverside Softball Team's hot streak continued Friday afternoon as the Highlanders opened the UCR Tournament with an 11-2 win over Southern Utah. UCR only needed six innings to take the game as senior Amanda Lynch crushed a walk-off homerun to run-rule the Thunderbirds and give her team its eighth straight win.

"We expect that from Amanda and know she is prepared for that moment, because of the work she puts in," Head Coach Nikki Palmer said. "She is that player for us, and that isn't easy by any means, but she pulls it off for us."

Junior Melanie Olmos earned the start in the circle and did not disappoint collecting the win with four scoreless innings. Olmos only allowed three hits, while striking out three for her second win of the season. She also got it going on the offensive end going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI.

"I liked Mel's attack mode when she got back out there," Palmer said. "She has been battling through some injuries so we are glad to have her back in the circle."

The Highlanders did all of their work offensively in three strong inning collecting five in the second and three in the fourth and sixth.

UCR collected its first run of the game on catcher interference, before senior Brittney Garcia stepped to the plate and roped a bases-clearing three-RBI triple to give her team a 4-0 lead. Olmos finished the second inning off with an RBI single to extend the game 5-0.

In the fourth frame junior Emma Ramelot took the Thunderbirds deep for her third homerun of the year; the infielder brought in freshman Nadia Witt on the knock growing the UCR lead. Freshman Sami Demyon was followed with an RBI single.

SUU notched its only scores of the game in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs to stay alive and avoid the fifth inning run-rule.

Unfortunately for Southern Utah, Lynch had other plans notching her walk-off three run homer in the sixth to take the game 11-2 in run-rule fashion.

Lynch, Ramelot, Garcia, and Olmos all registered multi-hit games on the day. Garcia led the way going 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and three RBI. The Highlanders would finish out-hitting the Thunderbirds 15-7.

UCR has now won its last eight straight games, which marks their best streak since 2016.
