Softball Sweeps Final Day of UCR Tournament; Extends Win Streak to Ten

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—It has been over two weeks since the Highlanders' last loss as the UC Riverside Softball kept its winning streak alive Sunday afternoon sweeping the final doubleheader of the UCR Tournament. The team has now won 10 straight games and swept its last two tournaments.

"Our team never quit today no matter what was thrown at them," Head Coach Nikki Palmer said. "We had a midweek game on the road and they're getting into finals, so I'm really proud to see the effort they all put in despite those conditions. For them to grind out two wins on top of that is awesome to see."

IDAHO STATE
UCR made the most of its only matchup of the weekend with the Bengals downing ISU 5-2 behind another great performance from Jacy Boles in the circle. The junior pitcher tossed another complete game to pick up her 8th win of the season, and did so with a career-high tying eight strikeouts. She allowed just five hits, two walks and two runs.

The Bengals were the first to strike scoring in the first frame, but the Highlander offense could not be contained for long as junior Emma Ramelot crushed her fourth homerun of the season in the bottom of the third. A two-run shot for the shortstop put UCR ahead 2-1.

Just a few outs later, the final run of the day would come across for ISU to retie the contest at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Haylee Kela stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and drew a walk to take the lead. Freshman Moana Pisia was the next up hitting a sac-fly to give UCR a 4-2 lead.

The final run of the game would come in the 6th inning as junior Danielle Ortega singles through the left-side, driving in freshman Karissa Arnold to take the game 5-2.

SOUTHERN UTAH
The Highlanders would get the best of the Thunderbirds for the second time this weekend in the team's Sunday afternoon matchup with UCR withstanding a late inning comeback.

Freshman Megan Casper took the circle for UC Riverside earning her third win of the year and shutting out SUU through the first three innings. She would end with four innings of work, allowing just three hits and two earned.

Senior Brittney Garcia broke the tie early in the first frame with an RBI single to give her team a 1-0 lead that would last three full innings, before the Thunderbirds took the lead in the fourth 2-1.

Immediately the Highlanders punched back as sophomore Raena Robinson found home plate from second base via heads-up base running. Senior Amanda Lynch stayed hot on the weekend hitting a sac-fly to drive in junior Kayla Curtan and give her team a late 3-2 lead.

In the fifth, Garcia struck again notching her second RBI of the game on a double to center that extended the margin to 4-2.

SUU threatened in final three innings, but junior Melanie Olmos would blank the Thunderbirds to earn her first save in blue and gold.

The tournament season has ended for the Highlanders who will now host Santa Clara in a weekend series before heading to conference play.

"Santa Clara is a good team, so we're excited to host them to get a feel for a three-game series and prepare for the Big West," Palmer said. "I think that will put us in a good place before our opener with Cal Poly.
