Softball Makes Highlander History with 12th Straight Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The 2019 UC Riverside Softball Team etched its name into Highlander history with a pair of wins over Santa Clara Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders took game one of the doubleheader 4-2 and earned their 12th straight win taking game two 8-2, which is a new Division I program record. The previous record of 11 was set in 2016.

"This couldn't have happened to a better group," Head Coach Nikki Palmer said. "They have put in the work day in and day out and have really bought in to what we want to accomplish. Everyone has been involved so it's been a true team effort."

GAME ONE
The scoring in game one of the doubleheader was limited to one inning by each team and would not come until late in the game.

Junior Jacy Boles (9-2) entered the circle for the Highlanders to start the weekend and did not disappointing tossing another complete game and allowing just two runs off of three hits, while striking out four. She took

The Broncos struck first scoring two runs in the fourth frame to take a late lead, but the Highlanders would get going on a two-out rally in the fifth.

With two on and two out, senior Brittney Garcia stepped to the plate hitting a bloop-single into right field to score juniors Emma Ramelot and Danielle Ortega to tie the game at 2-2. Three pitches later, junior Melanie Olmos gave her team the lead on a monster homerun to left-center, her second of the year.

UCR would hold on to take it 4-2.

GAME TWO
The second edition of the Saturday doubleheader could not have been more different from the first as the Highlanders got going early and never let go of the lead.

Ramelot started the game with a lead-off homerun and the Highlanders would collect another two first inning runs off heads up base-running by Ortega and an RBI double from senior Amanda Lynch

Freshman pitcher Megan Casper (4-2) got the nod for UCR, and like Boles before her, allowed just two runs in her complete game victory. Casper fanned a career-high seven batters on the afternoon and took a perfect game into the fourth inning.

The UCR offense got going again in the third frame as veterans Ortega and Lynch knocked in another pair of runs. A double-steal by freshman Moana Pisia and sophomore Raena Robinson would put Robinson on home plate as the Highlander extended their lead to 6-0.

Santa Clara added its only two runs of the day in the top of the fourth to cut the lead.

The final score of the day would cross in the fourth for UC Riverside as freshman Haylee Kela crushed her first career home run to left field with a runner on giving her team an 8-2 lead. The Highlanders would hang on for their 12th straight win.

UCR will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM.
