Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader in NC

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Highlanders continued their spring break journey with a doubleheader Tuesday morning at Shaw University then traveled to Campbell University for an afternoon match. The team took care of business in the morning beating Shaw 4-1 but the second match of the day proved too much as they fell to Campbell 3-4.

Shaw
After an hour rain delay to start the morning off, the team fell behind early by losing the double's point. After that, it was all Highlanders the rest of the way. Senior Kyle McCann stepped up and led the charge in singles winning 6-0 and 6-2 in position one.

Gilbert Chung extended his singles win streak to 13 matches winning in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-1. Anderson Ju and Andreas Whelan-Merediz both captured singles victories. After the match, Head Coach  Mattias Johannson talked about the rain delay and the team's quick response, "After a one hour rain delay in the morning, the guys came out flat in doubles but made up for it with four quick wins to seal the victory."

Campbell
The team hopped on a bus and traveled 30 miles south to take on Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Travel and jet lag finally caught up to the Highlanders as they fell to a formidable Fighting Camels team, 3-4.

Sophomore Vignesh Subramanyan put the Highlanders on the board after the team lost the first four points of the match. He was then followed with wins by freshman Andreas Whelan-Merediz and senior Anderson Ju in singles play.

Coach Johansson talked about the Highlander's quality opponent and how this matchup has played out in previous years, "They are a really solid team that went to the NCAA tournament last season after winning the conference championship. History repeated itself today as this was our third year in a row losing 3-4 to Campbell… It looked like the guys would pull it off this time but it wasn't meant to be. Maybe next year!"

The Highlanders finish up the North Carolina portion of their trip tomorrow with the first match of the day at Methodist at 6:00 am PST then traveling 70 miles north to play North Carolina Central at 12:00 pm PST.
