Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Wednesday Doubleheader Sweep for Men’s Tennis

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Men's tennis team finished up the North Carolina portion of their spring break trip winning both matches of a doubleheader. They won the first match, 8-1, playing the 9-point system at Methodist University then returned to the 7-point system and won 5-2, at North Carolina Central University.

Methodist
The team had an early morning match at Methodist in Fayetteville, North Carolina to start their day off. They easily handled the Monarchs en route to an 8-1 victory. Playing under the 9-point scoring system, the doubles teams of seniors Kyle McCann/Anderson Ju and juniors Nabil Abdallah/Gilbert Chung got the team started off 2-0. The only lost point of the match was a hard fought battle that sophomores Fillip Engstrom and David Ramirez fell 7-8.

The Highlanders showed out and swept every singles match in convincing fashion. If there was any traveler's fatigue for the team, they certainly didn't show it. McCann got the party started with a position one victory followed by Abdallah at position two.

Gilbert Chung bounced back after his 13 singles match winning streak was snapped at Campbell yesterday. Sophomore Vignesh Subramanyan won his singles match at position four and was followed by outstanding freshman Andrea Whelan-Merediz at position five. Ju put the final stamp on the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

North Carolina Central
After the undoubted win at Methodist, the team got on the bus and traveled 70 miles north to Durham, North Carolina. Senior Kyle McCann and freshman Andreas Whelan-Merediz won the first doubles match, 6-1. After position three doubles fell to even it up at 1-1, senior Anderson Ju and sophomore Vignesh Subramanyan came up big to win the match and steal the doubles' point.

"The guys played determined today, they got the doubles' point with a 7-6 win at position one after coming back from 2-5. NCCU is a very good team. It was a great team effort getting this done. Getting the doubles point is huge and takes off some pressure," Head Coach Mattias Johansson talking about the team's strong doubles efforts.

Whelan-Merediz won his fourth straight singles match and Anderson upped his match winning streak to three. Juniors Gilbert Chung and Nabil Abdallah also won their respective matches to give UC Riverside the 5-2 victory.

Sweeping the Wednesday doubleheader brings the Highlanders win total up to 15 on the year; one shy of the school record (16) that they set last year. The team will have the opportunity to break their own record tomorrow with a third straight day of doubleheaders.

The Highlanders travel up to Virginia to wrap up their spring break "vacation" to play at Hampton at 6:30 am PST and then finishing up at Norfolk State at 12:00 pm PST.
