Men’s Tennis Breaks School Record for Wins

HAMPTON, VA – The UC Riverside men's tennis team set a school record for wins in a season with 17 tonight in Virginia. The team's long week of travel ended today with wins at Hampton and Norfolk State. This is the fourth straight year the tennis team has broken the record for wins in a season. The win makes it four in a row and closes out their successful spring break trip at 6-1.

Coach Johansson came away exuberant after the long day, "Hats off to my guys! They really impressed me today after six matches and only an hour break between the morning and afternoon match."

Hampton
The highlanders started their last day of the east coast trip with a 6-1 win at Hampton. Senior Kyle McCann and freshman Andreas Whelan-Merediz got the Highlanders off on the right foot winning their doubles match, 6-2. Senior Anderson Ju and sophomore Vignesh Subramanyan got the win by default for the Highlanders to take the doubles point.

The team then went on to win five out of the six singles matches. "McCann and Whelan-Merediz got us the doubles point and after that we never looked back. Obviously guys are tired and worn out but they continue to find a way to win. If someone has a bad day, someone else is there to pick him and the team up. Another great win for our program," coach Johansson proudly talking about the team's win.

Norfolk State
The momentum carried over from the morning match as the Highlanders won the match 5-2 and swept through doubles play against Norfolk State. Doubles teams of senior Anderson Ju/sophomore Vignesh Subramanyan, senior Kyle McCann/freshman Andreas Whelan-Merediz and juniors Nabil Abdallah/Gilbert Chung won their matches 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2, respectively.

After positions one and two fell to the Spartans, positions three through six stepped up to close out the match with a win. Whelan-Merediz extended his own personal singles streak to give straight matches. Chung, Subramanyan and Ju also won their matches.

Head Coach Mattias Johansson talked about the team's gritty win and their long week, "Obviously fatigue being an issue, guys really had to dig deep to pull this one out. I'm very proud of them for winning this match but also going 6-1 on the trip – in addition to breaking the all-time win record for the fourth year in a row."

The team will get a much needed break after a successful week of breaking records. They head to Hawai'i to open Big West play next Friday, April 5th at 6:00pm.
