After Four-Game Winning Streak, Baseball Takes Loss to San Diego

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Strange things can happen during a baseball season. Tuesday afternoon at The Plex for the UCR Riverside Baseball team was no exception.

After winning four straight games, including a three-game sweep of Cal Baptist in the Crosstown Showdown, the team was unable to come away with a victory vs. San Diego, losing 31-3.

The Highlanders played from behind soon after the first pitch. Starting pitcher Connor Cannon was only able to record one out before head coach Troy Percival made a call to the bullpen. In total, Cannon allowed five runs on four hits for the loss. Having trouble finding the strike zone, the right-hander threw 33 pitches, 12 for strikes.

A total of nine Highlanders toed the rubber, with left-hander Devin Mckesson finding the most success. He allowed no runs and no hits in two innings of work, while striking out four batters.

The team's offense was on full display during the Cal Baptist series, banging out 37 hits and 20 runs. However, the team couldn't find that same success on Tuesday. It scored three runs on four hits.

With three walks loading the bases for the Highlanders in the bottom of the fifth inning, Adrian Garcia had an RBI single to center field. UCR wound up scoring two more runs in the inning, both unearned, after a throwing error by San Diego's catcher.

Senior Yeager Taylor got a hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to increase his hit streak to five games, three of which have been more than one hit.

The two teams didn't play each other last season, but the Highlanders lost both games vs. San Diego in 2017. The Highlanders are now 43-46-1 all-time vs. Toreros. The teams will play again on April 2 in San Diego.

UCR now hits the road for 17 straight road games. It begins with competition this weekend against Rider University and San Francisco. The Highlanders will play two games against each school.
