Despite Tough Conditions, Women's Golf Shows Flashes of Success at Gunrock Invitational

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The UC Riverside Women's Golf team had a lot to be proud of after the final round of play at the Gunrock Invitational on Tuesday.
Dealing with steady rain the entire day, the team did its best to stay focused given the conditions.
"It was a mental grind requiring a tremendous amount of fortitude, patience and positivity," head coach Mary Ritchie said. "As a team, we need more practice in these kinds of conditions. It will help us be mentally prepared in the future to succeed."
After combining to shoot a 309 in the first round, the Highlanders turned things up a notch and shot a 294 in the second round, which tied their lowest scoring round of the year. The Highlanders shot a 314 in the final round to finish ninth overall with a team score of 917 (+53).
The Invitational was hosted by UC Davis at the Del Paso Country Club, a 6,224, Par 72 layout. It has been the site of the 1957 U.S. Women's Amateur, 1964 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur, 1976 U.S. Women's Amateur, 1982 U.S. Women's Open and the 2015 U.S. Senior Open.
A smaller field than other tournaments the Highlanders competed in so far this season, the Invitational had a total of 11 teams. This marked the third straight week the team competed against Grand Canyon. Sacramento State finished first, shooting -5 (859) during the Invitational. Cal Berkeley finished in second place +11 (875), while Coastal Carolina was close behind in third place +15 (879).
After shooting a 78 in the opening round, Hailey White was able to keep her composure and shot a collegiate career-low 69 in the second round to go into the clubhouse tied for 14th. She had six birdies in the second round. Under tough conditions in the final round, White shot a 74 and had three birdies on the day, tying her for 13th overall (+5).
Ritchie was able to see the growth in White as the day progressed.
"Hailey played very smart and stayed patient, plotting her way around the course smartly in the challenging conditions," said Ritchie.
The team's next tournament will begin on April 1 at the Fresno State Classic at the Copper River Golf Club. In the Classic last season, the team finished eighth.
