Softball Earns a Pair of Walk-Off Shutouts on Day One of Highlander Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The Highlanders played 14 innings of a doubleheader Friday afternoon to open the Highlander Classic but the last thing the team's pair of wins were, was conventional, as the UC Riverside Softball Team earned a pair of walk-off shutouts over Omaha and Houston. UCR would down the Mavericks 8-0 in a six inning run rule before getting in a pitching duel with the Cougars that came down to a 1-0 walk-off in the eighth by junior Emma Ramelot

"This is exactly why we play the sport. It's for days like this," Head Coach Nikki Palmer said. "We were clutch today and I know that is going to give us a lot of energy heading into tomorrow."

In addition to Ramelot's heroics, the Highlander pitchers were truly instrumental as Jacy Boles threw a complete game shutout over Omaha and then entered late in the matchup with Houston to pick up her second win of the day. Freshman Megan Casper added an equally superb performance getting the start vs. the Cougars and tossing six scoreless innings.

"Jacy has been putting in endless work this year and it is really starting to pay dividends, so she absolutely deserved everything she earned today and her teammates helped her get there" Palmer said. "Megan is another great pitcher that has been working very hard so it was only a matter of time until we saw it come to fruition for her, and she was able to throw a great game for us."

GAME ONE
The first game of the tournament was dominant outing for the Highlanders who blanked and run-ruled a Maverick team in six innings.

Boles pitched a complete game gem allowing just three hits and zero walks, while striking out six to earn her third win of the season. The junior only faced a total of 20 batters in the victory.

On the offensive end several Highlanders went for multi-hit games as Brittney Garcia, Melanie Olmos, Sarah Parten, and Kayla Curtan notched a pair of hits and Haylee Kela went 3-for-4 on the day.

Freshman Moana Pisia was the first to break the scoreless tie in the second inning earning an RBI on a groundout, but the fourth inning was where the Highlanders did a bulk of their work. Garcia, Olmos, and Parten all earned RBI to put UCR up 6-0.

With two on in the sixth, freshman Haylee Kela stepped to the plate notching a single to bring another pair of runs and end the game 8-0.

GAME TWO
The defensive battle with Houston was a different story as the Cougars threatened to score on multiple occasions, but the Highlander defense did not break.

Casper, who allowed just four hits in six scoreless innings got out of tight situations all afternoon including two separate bases-loaded innings.

In the seventh inning, Boles would enter in with bases loaded and just one out, but prevented any Cougars to touch home, even when a free runner was placed on second in the eight inning due to tournament rules.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Highlanders refused to waste the privilege of a free base-runner as freshman Karina Ibarra bunted sophomore Raena Robinson over to third, before Ramelot stepped to the plate and ripped a single down the left line to win it for the Highlanders.

UC Riverside will look for its fourth straight win tomorrow at 2 PM when the team faces Houston in a rematch.
