Big Offensive Effort Not Enough for Baseball

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UC Riverside Baseball team wasn't lacking for offense in Albuquerque on Friday. The Highlanders continued to swing the bats well but weren't able to get enough outs to pull out the victory. The team lost a close one to New Mexico 11-10.

In another close battle for the Highlanders where the lead changed hands multiple times, the team wasn't able to hit their way out of this one.

New Mexico jumped in the first inning again to take an early 2-0 lead before Riverside answered with two of their own in the top of the third. One of those runs came off a solo shot from sophomore Nathan Webb. This was Webb's third straight game with at least two hits; he now has 13 multi-hit games on the season.

The Lobos took a small lead in the fourth before senior Yeager Taylor doubled to center to tie it up at 3-3. Sophomore Dylan Orick followed up with an RBI single to left to drive Taylor home and give the Highlanders their first lead of the game, 4-3.

That lead didn't last long as the Lobos scored seven runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take a 10-4 lead.

The Highlanders showed their never-give-up attitude again in the top of the sixth. Taylor hit his second double of the day to score two runs. Junior Connor Cannon followed up with an RBI double for himself. Junior Travis Bohall singled up the middle to drive in two more runs, for one of his three hits on the afternoon, to cut the lead to 10-9.

After a scoreless seventh inning from both teams, Cannon did what he has done for the past two weeks: crushed a deep home run. This big-time home run came at a big moment as it tied the game up at 10-10.

Unfortunately, New Mexico answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth and the Highlanders weren't able to score in their final at bats as they fell 11-10 in a great game.

There was a lot to be excited about for the team as Cannon continued his assault on a baseball as he had another four hit performance. His game-tying home run in the eighth gave him sole possession for the most home runs in the Big West with 12. His four hit performance saw his average jump up to a team leading .345, taking the top spot from the holdfast senior Yeager Taylor.

The Highlanders will try and take the rubber match tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
