Baseball’s Late Comeback Falls Short

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In the rubber match of a three game series at New Mexico, the UC Riverside Baseball team came up just short of a great comeback to fall 10-9. The Highlander's continue to swing the bats well as they had at least 15 hits in all three games of the series.

In a back and forth game where there was three ties and four lead changes, the team that scored 10 runs first ended up winning the sprint. Sophomore Nathan Webb gave the Highlanders their first lead with a two-run single in the top of the fourth to give the team at 3-2 lead.

The Lobos tied it up in the bottom half of the inning before freshman Jacob Shanks hit an RBI single to give Riverside the lead again at 4-3. Rinse and repeat for the bottom half of the inning as junior Travis Bohall gave the team their last lead at 5-4 in the top of the sixth.

Unfortunately, New Mexico got hot and scored six runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 10-4 lead.

But the Highlanders fought back valiantly like they have all season as sophomore Dylan Orick hit a solo shot in the top of the eighth. With two outs and two runners on, senior Dean Miller hit a three-run blast to cut the lead to 10-9.

But that home run was the last run for the Highlanders as they were unable score in their last at bats in the ninth.

Junior Connor Cannon capped off his monster week with a solid day of reaching base three times including a single that extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Webb stayed hot notching his fourth straight multi-hit performance with a career-high three hits. He also extended his own hitting streak to 12 games.

Shanks collected his third three-hit performance of the season. He raised his average over the .300 mark to .314 with those three hits.

The Highlanders head back to the Plex for four homes next week starting on Tuesday, April 23 vs CSU Bakersfield at 6:00 p.m.
