Softball Edged Out in Pitchers' Duel

HONOLULU, Calif.—Game one on the island saw a tough offensive outing for the UC Riverside Softball Team as the Highlanders fell 2-0 to host Hawaii. Senior Brittney Garcia had excellent day at the plate going a perfect 3-for-3, but the rest of the team could not get the bats going posting a collective 1-for-21 performance.

The game remained scoreless through four and a half innings as junior Melanie Olmos took the circle and pitched brilliantly allowing just five hits, a walk, and two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. The Rainbow Wahine posted two runs in the bottom of the fifth giving them a lead they would hold on to till the end.

Junior Jacy Boles made a relief appearance and kept UH away from home plate tossing 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out three.

The Highlanders had opportunities to close the gap putting base-runners in scoring position in multiple innings, but they would leave five stranded on the paths, including a pair in the seventh frame.

Garcia added three singles on the day, and senior Amanda Lynch collected a clutch single in the final inning.

UCR will look to bounce back tomorrow in the Saturday doubleheader.
