No Sweep for Baseball vs Top-10 UCSB

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Riverside, the Highlanders aimed to bring out the brooms and sweep top-10 UC Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, the Gauchos weren't in the mood for a sweep and knocked off the Highlanders 15-4.

UCSB started the game off swinging a hot bat and scored three runs on five hits in the first inning. Senior Dean Miller did his part to cut down the lead as he hit a deep shot over the left field wall to cut the lead to 3-1 after the first inning.

Freshman Trevor Bateson came in and pitched 3 1/3 innings scoreless innings of relief before he ran into trouble in the top of the sixth. The Gauchos were able to put on five runs in the sixth inning to take a seven run lead.

UCSB tacked on a couple more runs in the eighth before the Highlanders were able to chip away. Junior Connor Cannon hit his Big West leading 16th home run of the season. That home run put him in a tie for the UCR record for most home runs in a season.

Riverside followed up with three straight hits to give the Highlanders three runs on the day. They scored one more run in the bottom of the ninth to end the game 15-4.

Miller had a solid day as he finished with two hits including his home run. Sophomore Dylan Orick also had two hits on the afternoon. Cannon finished three-for-four on the day.

Riverside will take on UNLV on Tuesday, April 30th, at The Plex at 6:00 p.m.
