Bats Come Alive Late For Baseball

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A slow start didn't stop the UC Riverside Baseball team from clawing back and beating UNLV, 11-7. The Highlanders have continued to protect The Plex as they have a home record of 7-6 on the season.

Falling down 5-1 after the second inning, the Highlanders had a lot of work to do to get back into the game. Senior Dean Miller hit a full count pitch to deep center in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2.

The Rebels added two more in the top of the sixth to give them a 7-2 lead before the Highlanders started finding the gaps.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Miller once again got the Highlanders going as he roped an RBI single to left to score sophomore Nathan Webb. Sophomore Dylan Orick followed up with an RBI single of his own as they cut the lead to 7-4.

Senior Matt Hardy came in to pinch-hit in a big moment with the bases loaded. Hardy came through as he hit a single to right field to score two runs. Another run scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to tie the game up at 7-7. Another fielding error in the inning allowed Hardy to score to give Riverside their first lead of the game.

The Rebels were threatening in the top of the eighth as they had runners on first and third with one out. They hit a fly ball to right field to Miller that UNLV expected to score a run on a sac fly. But Miller caught it in stride and threw a laser to home to gun out the runner to end the threat and hold the Highlander's lead.

The momentum carried over into the bottom half of the eighth as the team score three more runs capped off by Webb's two-run home run. Freshman Andre Granillo came in to shut the door on the Rebels as he earned his second save in three games. The freshman has been lights out in his last five appearances as he has pitched 9.1 scoreless innings, only allowing three hits while striking out 13 batters.

The Highlanders have won four out of their last five games as they look to continue their strong play this weekend at Long Beast State.
