Softball Run Rules Long Beach State; Splits Opening Doubleheader

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—After dropping a tough game to open the series with Long Beach State, the UC Riverside bounced back to run rule the Beach in game two. The Highlanders would fall 14-6 in game but would run rule LBSU 11-3 in six innings to cap off the day.

"You know I say this a lot, but this team has no quit in them," Head Coach Nikki Palmer said. "After the first game, we went back and saw what we did to really hurt ourselves and made the corrections and got a better result in the second game."

Game One
The first game of the weekend saw a tough defensive outing for the Highlanders who committed four errors and allowed the Beach a sizable scoring outing in the final inning.

LBSU opened the weekend with a a strong first inning scoring three, but the Highlanders were quick to punch back scoring two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Brittney Garcia got it started with an RBI double before junior Melanie Olmos added an RBI single to cut the lead 3-2.

Three more runs in the second frame would grant Long Beach a commanding lead but the Highlanders were not done yet scoring two more on heads up base-running in the fourth to cut the lead again.

Unfortunately an eight run seventh for LBSU would take away UCR's chance at a comeback despite tacking on two more in final inning.

Game Two
The second game of the series was a complete offensive turn around for the Highlanders who scored 11 runs in six innings after leaving 11 on base in game one. A solid outing from freshman pitcher Megan Casper mixed with a strong performance at the plate, with all nine batters collecting a hit, would give UCR a sixth inning, walk-off, run-rule victory.

Casper earned another impressive win to add to her resume Saturday afternoon pitching a complete game victory in six innings, allowing just two earned.

The Highlander bats got going in the second frame as junior Emma Ramelot crushed a bases-clearing double to right center to give her team a 3-0 lead.

LBSU added three in the second and third innings to ice the game at 3-3.

From there on out it would be all Highlanders who added three in the fifth and five in the sixth to earn the walk-off run rule win.

Olmos added a sac-fly in the fifth and stepped to the plate to notch the walk-off in the sixth roping a single through the middle to score the final two runs.

Garcia finished going 2-for-3 with an RBI and both Ramelot and Olmos capped off the day with three RBI a piece. Freshman Nadia Witt added a 2-for-3 with an RBI performance as well.

The rubber match is set for tomorrow at 1 PM. All fans should be plan to get to the field early, as we expect a packed house.
