Quiet Offense Costs Softball Final Game of Long Beach Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif.— Offensive struggles for the UC Riverside Softball Team (20-15, 3-3) cost the Highlanders the  third and deciding game of the series with Long Beach State (16-19, 3-3) Sunday afternoon, as LBSU took the rubber match 7-0. Both teams now sit at 3-3 in the Big West standings, which locks them in a tie for fourth place after two weeks of competition.

Junior Melanie Olmos (3-7) earned the start in the circle for the Highlanders and held off the Beach for much of the afternoon, but unfortunately for the pitcher, a pair of errors and a lack of run support would make LBSU a tough team to handle. Olmos finished with six innings of work allowing ten hits and four earned runs. She also added a hit on the offensive end.

The Highlanders weren't short of the hits collecting six, but could not string them together in game three in what was just the team's fourth shutout in 35 games.

UCR threatened twice in the game with a pair of runners on second and third in the second frame, and again in the seventh inning with the bases-loaded, but neither time could find home plate.

Junior Sarah Parten was a bright spot for the Highlanders going a perfect 3-for-3 and freshman Moana Pisia had a great showing lacing a single in her pinch-hit appearance with two outs in the seventh. Senior Hannah Rodriguez notched the sole extra base-hit for UCR crushing a double to left-center.

UC Riverside will now take a quick break from conference play as the team heads to CBU Wednesday night for the Crosstown Showdown.
